To me, there’s nothing better than listening to jazz in the fall. I’m not quite sure what it is, but to me, fall just calls for jazz music. Perhaps in addition to a warm jacket in the fall, I just love the coziness of jazz music. That’s why this month, I thought of an intervention to be used with a classic jazz song, “’Tis Autumn”, by The Nat King Cole Trio. I love the lyrics to the song because they evoke such great fall time imagery. Lyrics like, “the trees say they’re tired..” or “then the birds got together, to chirp about the weather…” is just great songwriting in my opinion. So in a session, I imagine playing this song on a speaker while the client/s and therapist create an autumn soundscape with available instruments. Everyone picks one instrument to play along that says to them something about fall. Once the song is over, everyone can talk about what the instrument reminded them of and why. Not only that, but for older clients, the therapist can lead into a discussion about how fall makes us feel. Some people may feel happy, some may feel sad, and that’s all ok. Just allowing the client/s to open up and express themselves is golden. I hope this can be a great addition to your fall sessions and a way to bring some cozy jazz in them as well.
