The mission of the SMU music therapy clinic is to provide a safe and rich therapeutic setting allowing student-centered education through an individualized, competency-based program. Students and clinicians in the clinic are musicians of the highest caliber and provide goal-centered therapeutic music experiences through a wide variety of evidence-based approaches to music therapy.

About KidLinks:

KidLinks is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides healing, hope, and happiness for children and families through therapeutic music entertainment and music therapy programs and resources. For well over three decades, impacting more than 385,000 children and caregivers, KidLinks has provided healing experiences for children with special needs through performing arts and media, therapeutic music initiatives, university-level music therapy training, and free/low-cost treatment programs.

Job Summary:

Under the guidance and direction of the Assistant Professor and Chair of Music Therapy at SMU and KidLinks Director of Programs, the contract, part-time Music Therapist in Residence is responsible for providing up to 8 sessions (8 hours) a week of music therapy for children with special needs. This position starts immediately.

This position is sponsored by KidLinks’ J.W. Brown Music Therapist Residence Program to support the SMU Music Therapy Clinic in providing free-of charge Music Therapy to youth in the community. The position is named in honor of J.W. Brown, and recognizes the energy industry’s commitment to the 20-year success of the Energy Golf Classic in raising funds for KidLinks’ mission to provide healing, hope and happiness to children through music and media.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Establish goals for therapy, collecting and analyzing data from the client’s responses to music, and customizing treatment plans for each client
  • Integrate behavioral, developmental, neurological, and/or improvisational approaches into music therapy treatments services
  • Provide emotional support and coping mechanisms
  • Maintain proper and thorough documentation of music therapy sessions
  • Notify families of client’s progress throughout therapy period
  • Faithfully represent and carry out the mission and goals embodied in the KidLinks philosophy and the Code of Ethics of the American Music Therapy Association
  • Protect the confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Help set the tone and carry out the vision of KidLinks and the SMU MT Clinic

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in music therapy
  • Board Certification through The Certification Board for Music Therapists
  • Experience working with children with special needs and familiarity with a variety of diagnoses
  • Strong music skills with the ability to play and perform on many different types of musical instruments
  • Deep understanding of human psychology and knowledge of the principles and methods of therapy and counseling
  • Must possess empathy, compassion, imagination, and patience
  • Strong project and time management skills
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Committed to, and proficient in, serving individuals with special medical and emotional needs

Working Conditions:

  • Position requires an individual to work independently of a structured office environment
  • Position requires reliable personal transportation to music therapy clinic on SMU campus
  • Position requires therapist to carry her/his own liability insurance
